April is National Facial Protection Month, so we wanted to take this opportunity to inform all of our athlete patients and parents about the benefits of properly fitted sports mouthguards.
Millions of teeth are avulsed each year from sports related injuries or trauma without the use of a mouthguard. Studies show that an athlete is 60 times more likely to endure damage to the teeth when not wearing a protective mouthguard. Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports provides the following simple functions:
1. They prevent laceration and bruising by acting as a barrier between lips and cheeks and the teeth.
2. They prevent tooth fractures or dislocations by cushioning the teeth from outside forces.
3. Opposing teeth are protected from direct contact with one other.
4. They help reduce neurologic injury by acting as shock absorbers between the upper and lower jaws, thus reducing the chances of a concussion
5. They can provide positive reinforcement in the prevention of neck injuries.
What types of mouthguards are best to wear?
A Boil-and-Bite Mouthguard are the most commonly used mouthguards in the pediatric population due to constantly changing dentition. They are made of a thermoplastic material that when immersed in boiling water, can be formed to the teeth while biting with pressure.
A Custom Made Mouthguard is fabricated and designed for each individual patient. Although more costly, an impression is taken in a dental office and pressure lamination is used to for a more comfortable, form fitting option.
How do I keep my mouthguard clean?
· Rinse your mouthguard immediately after each wear in warm water to remove any debris.
· Brush your mouthguard with a soft bristled toothbrush with mild antibacterial soap. Keep in mind that using toothpaste to brush your mouthguard can damage it since toothpaste is abrasive.
· A deep clean should be completed weekly.
-You could use an over the counter denture cleaner to soak weekly.
-You can also use hydrogen peroxide and vinegar by soaking for 30 minutes in distilled vinegar and then in
hydrogen peroxide for 30 more minutes.
-Lastly, you could dilute mouthwash with water and soak for 30 minutes
· Always place the mouthguard on a clean surface to dry for about 15-20 minutes prior to placing in a sanitary case.
