A dental sealant is a thin protective coating (clear or white) that is painted in the grooves of permanent molars. Sealants act as a protective barrier helping to block bacteria and food debris from the chewing surfaces of molars which are most susceptible to carious lesions.
Studies show that dental sealants reduce the risk of cavities on permanent molars by 80%. Sealants are easy to apply, safe and can last for several years. Avoiding foods that are sticky, hard or crunchy help increase the longevity and effectiveness of dental sealants. Don’t worry, we check to make sure they are intact at each routine recare visit!
Sealants are elective, but are recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for the preventive effectiveness of reducing the risk of tooth decay. Although recommended on newly erupted permanent molars, sealants are beneficial at any age.
