Teeth grinding, also known as Bruxism, is a natural habit among children and it can start as soon as teeth erupt. Although the habit sounds concerning, and often cause parents to worry, it’s actually more common than you think.
Unlike adults, grinding in children is not stress related and often happens while the child is asleep. The habit tends to fluctuate as new teeth erupt, baby teeth exfoliate, and as the jaw continues to grow.
Any sort of interceptive therapy, such as a night or occlusal guard, is not indicated during this crucial time of development. Interceptive therapy is NOT recommended (unless persistent) until all permanent teeth have erupted and the child’s development is complete.
**Newer information indicates if grinding and snoring are occurring together, it may be time to seen an ENT for an airway evaluation.**
