My baby is teething, what should I use?
Use of topical anesthesics, such as teething gels as well as teething tablets with Benzocaine as an ingredient, are discouraged by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry due to potential toxicity. Toxicity can occur within a few minutes or up to 1-2 hours after application.
Symptoms of toxicity include: trouble breathing, tiredness, headache or lightheadness, tachycardia and/or pale, gray or blue discoloration of the skin, lips and nail beds.
Increased drooling can lead to loose stools. A low grade fever may also be associated with teething. However, if a temperature reads 101° F or more, your child probably picked up a virus when mouthing hands or objects. At this time, it is advised to see your pediatrician.
Encouraged, safe/non-toxic pain relief options include: offering chilled wash cloths, teething rings or age appropriate foods, massaging the gum tissue and the appropriate dosing of Children’s Motrin.
